Palliative Care Education & Clinical Practice

The Education department is one of the critical departments at Nairobi Hospice that is concerned with Education, Training and research in Palliative Care.

Having been the first of its kind in East, southern and central Africa it has played a pivotal role in advancement of Palliative Care education and clinical practice in Kenya and Africa at large.

Since its inception in 1991, we have trained over eight (8) diploma cohorts with alumni numbering over two (200) hundred graduates who Our Graduates have gone ahead to take active roles such as leadership roles, advocacy, lecturing, mentorship and as clinical practitioners in Palliative Care in Kenya and Africa at large.

It headed by The head of education officer who coordinates trainings, Education and Research.

The path to becoming a Palliative Care practitioner is both a challenging and a rewarding experience that will ultimately require you to reflect on your clinical practice, apply critical thinking skills and engage in research in order to base your practice on scientific evidence, patients and family preferences and values and individual expertise. This approach of care will in no doubt ensure improved quality of life of patients and families you care for throughout the patients’ disease trajectory, which is the hallmark of Palliative Care.

The department boast of highly qualified lecturers and trainers in Palliative Care with hands on experience who are committed to guide our students to achieve their learning objectives, become responsible and dependable practitioners and graduate on time.

Our library has some of the best books on Palliative Care training and practice with a conducive study environment. Our training hall is well equipped, spacious and very conducive for learning with no distraction.

Our Diploma & Certificate Courses

Higher Diploma in Palliative Care

In collaboration with Oxford Brookes university we offer Palliative Care training and education in Kenya and Africa since the early 1990s.
The graduates of the Diploma of Higher in Palliative Care have been able to engage in various roles and activities in Palliative Care in Kenya, Eastern Central and Southern African Countries that have led to the expansion of Palliative Care service in the whole region.
This Diploma is a multi-disciplinary program that is intended to equip multiple disciplines with Palliative Care knowledge and skills that will be essential for them to practice as an interdisciplinary team in the clinical set up.

Certificate in Palliative Care – Community Health Volunteers (CHVs)

We are also engages in training Community Health volunteers (CVS) in response to the Palliative Care needs of people leaving in hard to reach areas of Nairobi City County, especially in low earning settlements.

By training the community volunteers who in turn educate and sensitize individuals, families and community members on Palliative Care services, we create awareness of the services, improve health seeking behaviour, cooperation and overall support of the patients and families with life limiting illnesses.

Certificate for Health Care Professionals

This is a short course that targets health care professionals who are practicing in the health care set-up. It seeks to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge in management of patients with Palliative Care needs due life-threatening diseases that they have as well are their families.
The participants will cover the following areas in broad.
● Principles and management of patients needing Palliative care.
● Ethical and legal aspects in Palliative care
● Management of psychosocial issues in Palliative care

Certificate for Non Health Providers

The course targets religious leaders, individuals working in departments dealing with life threatening illnesses and those without a medical background, but who play a key role with patients with chronic illness in order to improve their quality of life and their families.

The course covers the following areas.

● Ethical and legal aspects in Palliative care
● Management of psychosocial issues in Palliative care
